Alexandria / Arlington

When you're heading to Washingtion, DC, make sure to include two highlights of Northern Virginia. Take the Metro to Braddock Road and stroll around the eclectic, fun, Del Ray section of Alexandria. Visit St. Elmo's, a central gathering place, then continue to Los Tios or Taqateria for authenic Mexican Cuisine, Artfully Chocolate, for artisan sweets & Dairy Godmother for home made ice cream. Cheesetique is a popular wine bar and Fireflies has great hummus, burgers, pizza and music at night. A mile south or one Metro stop further is King Street in Old Town. Walk the half mile to the harbor and visit lots of boutiques and restaurants. Take the scenic boat ride back to Georgetown from the harbor or return by Metro.

Arlington, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC is another area you will want to explore. The Pentagon City Mall has major retailers. One mile south is Crystal City with many hotels, it's convenient to Reagan Airport and shops and restaurants including Legal Sea Foods.. On 23rd street, you will find Freddies Beach Bar, the leading gay venue in Northern VA and also a destination for Washington residents. Freddies serves up delicious food and generous drinks in a fun filled environment.

Alexandria and Arlington are both most enjoyable and easily accessible by car or public transportation from the District. Combined, they comprise the hidden gems of the Washington, DC metro area. You will be glad you ventured out to see and enjoy these neighboring cities.
